I had seen some designs created using quilling a technique I haven't used before and one I had wanted to explore in my project. I started by cutting strips of acetate 1/2 cm and 1 cm thick and attached some of them together using a Casal Guidi technique called single Italian insertion stitch. The technique is used to attach two pieces together with a lacy, open effect however is with the holes being spaced exactly opposite each other it appeared less lacy in style. The top colour of the strips attached was varied to show how both would look on top.

The results below worked really well and the organza held its shape without creating areas of different tension. The gold thread particularly has received a lot of praise since the sample has been displayed on my wall in the studio. It was also noted how nice the shadows it created were when they appeared later in the day due to the artificial light. This is something I need to look into how i could recreate and whether the idea would need to be layered onto a white fabric to create the same effect. It may also be nice however to see if would be appear on the skin if there were no other fabric underneath.

Another idea I worked on was creating a 3D surface by looping the acetate and attaching it down. The idea looked good in the hoop however it did manipulate the fabric when taken out. It is an idea that would need to be stitched onto a sturdier fabric to hold it flat or have weight added underneath to pull the organza flat. I used a clear thread which works well but I do feel some decoration between the loops would allow for it to be hidden.

Going forward I will be looking at scale and quantity of these ideas and, seeing how they work on the body. To do this I will recreate them in paper to allow me to work quickly and create them in larger quantities easier.

Assessment Feedback http://kayleighmace.co.uk/assessment-feedback/ http://kayleighmace.co.uk/assessment-feedback/#respond Fri, 02 Dec 2016 22:49:51 +0000 http://kayleighmace.co.uk/?p=440 I got my feedback from my first assessment and overall it was pretty positive but there are some areas for improvement. Being graded as an indication of how well we are currently doing and written feedback gives me a better idea of how my project is coming along against the learning outcomes. The results were pretty much what I expected and the feedback will be helpful in taking the project forward. I wasn't disappointed with the results as it gives me drive to work to get better results next time and areas that need addressing first I have already planned in or completed since I presented. Market was the main area that needed work as I hadn't researched much into it but had planned shop visits and started to look into it more. It was good to see that my project proposal scored highly as that was one area I was worried about. Continued development of technical ideas and visual research is where the project now needs to go so that I can start to bring in the smart element.

Colour http://kayleighmace.co.uk/colour/ http://kayleighmace.co.uk/colour/#respond Tue, 15 Nov 2016 17:25:59 +0000 http://kayleighmace.co.uk/?p=212 I've spent the last few days working on the colour development for my project. The initial inspiration has come from the artist Alexandra Pacula who creates oil painting of urban night life. These are some of her paintings:

Inspired by these I took my own images of light movement at night. They ranged from images of shows, buildings, traffic and light displays but were all taken in a way that distorts the original subject so the colour becomes the focus. These are a few of the photos I have been working on:

From these images I took the main 8 colours that were in each and analysed them looking at the tones, proportion and how they would compare on their current dark background if I were to swap it with the lightest colour/white. There were a range of colours that came through however there were  similarities in some shades such as reds and blues. Further development and analysis will help to determine which of these if any will bee the most fitting for my final palette.

Whilst doing this I also researched designer from my intended market to see what colours they were current using and came across Mary Katrantzou's latest resort collection.

The Primary colours are quite similar to those from my initial ideas showing that these bright colours are being used in high-end fashion. There were also similarities with the predicted spring/summer 18 colours on WGSN. It was pointed out to me however that I needed to be careful with my research as I need to be working beyond trends and not within them. This was not actually my intention, the research was simply to show that the colours that I am developing could work within commercial fashion. As a result of this feedback I need to make this clear that I am designing ahead of any predicted trends and not working to what has already been done/predicted for the coming seasons.
